About the Founder
Michael N. Bergman
B.C.L., LL.B.
FOUNDER & SENIOR LEGAL COUNSEL
Michael N. Bergman began his own legal practice in November 1977, the same year he was admitted to the Barreau du Québec. Over nearly five decades, the practice has remained grounded in the same principles: experience developed through practice, sound judgment, and a steadfast commitment to the interests of each client.
Called to the Bar of Ontario in 1981, Maître Bergman practises in both of Canada’s legal traditions — Québec civil law and the common law. He has appeared before trial and appellate courts in Québec and Ontario, courts in Nova Scotia and Alberta, the Federal Courts, the Supreme Court of Canada and the U.S. District Court, as well as numerous administrative tribunals. He has also represented clients and made presentations before official committees of Canadian Parliament and the National Assembly of Québec.
A long-standing advocate for language and minority rights, he has acted in significant constitutional litigation, including before the Supreme Court of Canada on behalf of the Quebec English School Boards Association, and as counsel to the Task Force on Linguistic Policy in its court challenge to Bill 96.
His commitment to access to justice began early: in 1973, while a law student, he founded what is today the Legal Information Clinic at McGill, where he remains an Honorary Lifetime Board Member. He has since lectured at McGill’s Faculty of Law in trial advocacy and in constitutional law and language rights.
"To a courageous man, one who dares fight for his country!"
— André Pratte, former Senator and Chief Editorial Writer of La Presse, handwritten dedication in Aux Pays des Merveilles, Essai sur les mythes politiques québécois
